Wrigley's Ad

Toronto Telegram, March 5 1924

Oh, my God. The pointy-arrowed sprite has a gun.

Because this was long before people realized that sugared gum actually harmed teeth, gum manufacturers could bill their product as an aid to tooth nutrition; after all, a “widely known medical work” says it is, so it’s got to be true. And, of course, chewing gum relieves acid mouth; remember, alkaline good, acid bad.

I would guess that Wrigley stopped manufacturing Nips at about the time the term “Nip” became a term used to racially insult the Japanese.
