Aquazone Alkalinus
Toronto Globe, July 5 1923

I confess that I haven’t the slightest idea what alkalinus is or why anyone would drink it. An on-line search for “alkalinus” found references in a couple of medical dictionaries: apparently, it’s Latin for “alkaline”. This doesn’t help. (But remember: alkaline good, acid bad.) In Toronto’s city directory for 1929, Aquazone was listed as having their headquarters at 5-11 Van Horne, and was described as being manufacturers of mineral water. In other words, Aquazone Aqualinus was the Jazz Age equivalent of Perrier. The 1930 city directory doesn’t list Aquazone, which is not surprising, as there’s not likely to be much demand for fizzy water in the middle of a depression. People were too busy saving up to buy bread. |
