I remember this from way back when but I never really liked it. I can't really say why - it's not the religious references. Maybe it's too whitebread for my taste. But it does stick in the brain.
"Put Your Hand In The Hand" was written by Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan. He was best known for writing "Snowbird", which Anne Murray made famous. Ms. Murray also recorded the first recording of "Put Your Hand In The Hand"; sadly, I couldn't make it through much of it.
Ocean were from Toronto. Their version of "Put Your Hand In The Hand" reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies. The band had three other songs reach the top 20 in Toronto in 1971 and 1972 but did not have further significant success in the US. They disbanded in 1975.
