Presumably, this is because there is an issue with the quality of the original microfiche scan of this photo or perhaps its digital transfer, but we don't see Flight Commander Atcherley's face in this photo. There's a cap, a pair of hands, and bits of a suit. Is he actually in there?
Air Marshal Sir Richard Llewellyn Roger Atcherley (1904-1970), to give him his eventual full name and title, had a distinguished career serving with the British Royal Air Force until he retired in 1959. His Wikipedia page lists his nickname as "Batchy"; the page doesn't list him as ever having married, so maybe this stood for Bachelor.
Sir Richard had a twin brother, David Atcherley (1904-1952), who also became an RAF officer. His career was cut short when his plane disappeared when flying from Egypt to Cyprus. No trace of him was ever found, despite an extensive search.
The Schneider Trophy, sometimes called the Schneider Cup, was awarded to the winner of a race for seaplanes and flying boats. 1931 was the last year that the race was held.
