Ana Cumpănaș

Toronto Daily Star, October 1 1935

Ana Cumpănaș (1889-1947), also known as Anna Sage ("Sage" is an anglicization of Suciu, her married name), was a brothel owner in Chicago. Facing deportation to her native Romania as a "woman of low moral character", she discovered that gangster John Dillinger was regularly visiting her establishment. In an attempt to stave off deportation, she offered to turn him in to the FBI.

Her $5000 reward was allegedly only half of what she had been promised and she was deported to Romania anyway, in 1936. She led a quiet life there until passing away from liver disease.

Ms. Sage was nicknamed "The Woman In Red" because she was supposed to wear that colour at the time of Dillinger's capture. She apparently actually wore orange.
