Albert Baron Guggenheim

Toronto Daily Star, November 9 1932

A search revealed that the alleged Mr. Guggenheim was arrested later that year for passing bad checks to two employees of a nightclub. There is no evidence to suggest that he was either a member of the Guggenheim family or an heir to an English tobacco king.

Bernhard Baron (1850-1929) was born in Belarus, emigrated to the United States, and then settled in England, where he made a lot of money selling tobacco. He then spent some of it on philanthropy, supporting hospitals and a school in London's East End. His actual heir was his son, Louis, who took over from his father when he passed away. The junior Baron was, suitably enough, eventually honoured with a baronetcy.
