Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) continued to work for many years after this photo was taken. Her favourite subjects included ballet, circus performers, and gypsies. She became an official British war artist during the Second World War.
In 1946, she painted The Nuremberg Trial, which depicted the Nazis in the dock at Nuremberg with a city in flames in the background. In 1965, she became the first woman to be given a retrospective of her work at the Royal Academy.
