André Lapine (1866-1952) was born in Latvia and worked as a painter in the Netherlands for 20 years before emigrating to Canada in 1905. He was best known for his paintings of horses.
A committee was formed to pay his medical bills after he was hit by a car in Toronto in 1934. Happily, he recovered from his injuries and was able to resume painting.
Lapine and his wife moved to Minden, Ontario in the 1940s. Many of his paintings are displayed in the Agnes Jamieson Gallery there.
