Suzanne Lenglen (1899-1938) was the best women's tennis player of the early 1920s. She was only defeated once in a singles match after the First World War, compiling a 179-match win streak at one point. In 1926, after a dispute at Wimbledon, she turned professional, earning over $100,000 in a tour that lasted through 1927.
Ms. Lenglen was also known for being the first female tennis player to dress in clothes that did not hinder her play. She passed away after a period of illness; the cause of death was not completely clear but was reported to be pernicious anemia or leukemia.
The "Vincent Rogers" captioned here is likely Vincent Richards (1903-1959), who won seven doubles and two mixed doubles Grand Slam titles between 1918 and 1926 before turning professional.
