Albert A. Michelson (1852-1931) was a physicist who focused on determining the speed of light. He won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1907, becoming the first American to win a scientific Nobel.
I could not find any information on his attempt to send light from Mount Wilson to Mount San Jacinto. In the early 1920s, he sent light from Mount Wilson to Lookout Mountain, about 22 miles away.
When asked why he studied light, Dr. Michelson apparently responded, "Because it's so much fun."
