Vern Speich (1895-1942) has not left a very large internet footprint behind him. The only references I could find to his feat were a brief mention in an article in that day's Time magazine, an article in the New York Times, and a page on him on the Davis-Monthan Aviation Field Register website.
From the latter, I learned that Speich owned an automobile dealership in Santa Ana, California, that he flew cross-country to the Elks convention in 1928, and that he died of a heart attack early in 1942.
