This song was very popular on alternative radio stations when it was released in 1983. Nowadays, it wouldn't get airplay, of course, because of the stereotypical India cultural references.
It was also one of the last songs produced from the early years of synthesizers, in which they generated weird beeps, boops, and buzzes; the electronic dance music genre preserves this type of synthesized music. I enjoyed listening to it at the time but find it somewhat irritating now.
The Hawaiian Pups were from the New York area. They released one EP in 1982 and another in 1983 before disbanding. The three members of the group, John Klett, John Terelle, and Tara Shanahan, went on to play on various other recordings, possibly providing more beeps and boops.
