Barbara Acklin - Love Makes a Woman

August 1968 - Weeks On Chart: 6 - Highest Position: 3

I thought this was okay but not particularly memorable - there were a bunch of songs that sounded like this around that time.

Barbara Acklin (1943-1998) grew up in Chicago and started singing in nightclubs when she was a teenager. She released singles regularly between 1966 and 1975 but only achieved significant success with "Love Makes a Woman", which reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the R&B chart.

Ms. Acklin was also a songwriter. She co-wrote "Whispers (Gettin' Louder)", which Jackie Wilson took to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #26 on the CHUM chart in 1966. She and Eugene Record wrote several songs for the Chi-Lites, including "Have You Seen Her", which made it to #3 in the US and the UK.

In later years, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and continued to tour before passing away from pneumonia at a too-young age.
