Betty Harris - Cry To Me

December 1963 - Weeks On Chart: 6 - Highest Position: 19

This is a wonderful bit of old-school soul goodness. I love it.

"Cry To Me" was written by producer-songwriter Bert Berns under his pen name of Bert Russell (his full name was Bertrand Russell Berns). His production and songwriting credits are extensive enough that I have seriously considered doing up a website based on them alone.

"Cry To Me" was originally recorded by Solomon Burke in 1962. His version is slicker and more up-tempo; it's not bad, but Ms. Harris's version is better. He reached #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his recording but didn't get airplay in Toronto.

Betty Harris (born 1939) was from Orlando, Florida. Her version of "Cry To Me" reached #23 on the Billboard Hot 100. She continued recording singles and reached the lower reaches of the Billboard charts twice before leaving the music business in 1970 to raise a family.

Ms. Harris returned to the music business in 2005 and recorded a new album in 2007. She apparently has been in a battle to earn the royalties due to her; hopefully, she has been successful.
