The Contours were from Detroit; "Do You Love Me" was their third single. It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the R&B chart. It was included on the soundtrack for the movie Dirty Dancing in 1987. Re-released as a single in 1988, it made it back to #11 on the Hot 100.
The Dave Clark Five released a cover version of this in 1964. It was a good match for their style and made it to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in its own right, as well as #5 on the CHUM chart.
Various versions of the Contours kept plugging away into the 21st century. Billy Gordon, the lead singer on "Do You Love Me", left the group in the mid-1960s and passed away in 1999.
