The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards - Amazing Grace

June 1972 - Weeks On Chart: 7 - Highest Position: 1

Strictly speaking, the artists for this song, as shown on its label, were The Pipes And Drums And The Military Band Of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers & Greys). But, naturally, everybody shortened it when referencing it.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys) is a light cavalry regiment of the British Army and is its senior Scottish regiment. It was formed in 1971 when two previously existing regiments were amalgamated: the 3rd Carabiners (Prince of Wales's Dragoon Guards) and The Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons).

"Amazing Grace" is a Christian hymn written in 1772 by Anglican clergyman John Newton. It has been recorded over 1000 times as of 2019 and is estimated to be sung or performed about 10 million times a year. The Guards' version of this song made it to #1 in Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa, and reached #11 on the Billboard pop chart. It was the most popular selling single in the UK in 1972. However, because it combined bagpipes with a military band, the Guards' Pipe Major was summoned to Edinburgh Castle and chastised for demeaning the bagpipes. Oops.
