Dr. Music - Sun Goes By

July 1972 - Weeks On Chart: 4 - Highest Position: 17

This is basically jazz plus ensemble singing. I remembered it from years ago but it wasn't ever really my thing. I guess you can't please everybody.

Dr. Music was formed in 1969 by Toronto-based performer and producer Doug Riley when he was asked to put a band together for The Ray Stevens Show. When the show was cancelled, the band recorded an album that contained two songs that got regular airplay in Canada. The first, "One More Mountain To Climb", was written by Neil Sedaka and reached #14 nationally in Canada but didn't chart in Toronto; I remember hearing it, so I guess not enough people in the big city bought it. The second, "Sun Goes By", reached #23 nationally.

Dr. Music split up shortly after that. Riley put together two other versions of the band in the early 1970s, one of which became the house band for Keith Hampshire's television show, Music Machine. He continued his career as a performer and arranger, becoming a member of the Order of Canada in 2003. He passed away in 2007.

Created March 13, 2026.
