The Electric Prunes - I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)

February 1967 - Weeks On Chart: 9 - Highest Position: 11

This song is at the exact intersection point between mid-1960s garage rock and late 1960s psychedelic rock. I found it fascinating.

The Electric Prunes were formed in Los Angeles in 1965. "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)", their second single, reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their followup, "Get Me To The World On Time", which was more of a classic garage rock song, reached #27 on the Billboard chart but did not get airplay in Toronto.

The band's manager and producer then decided that the best route to commercial success was to integrate Gregorian music into their sound. They recruited composer David Axelrod to write some but discovered that the band weren't able to play it, disbanding themselves in 1968. Various musicians, including some original members, released two albums of this material, titled Mass in F Minor and Release of an Oath. When this didn't work out, another group of Electric Prunes was assembled in 1969 to create an album called Just Good Old Rock and Roll.

The band reformed with their original lineup in 1999 and produced three albums between 2001 and 2006. Their frontman, James Lowe, passed away in 2025.

Created February 22, 2026.
