The Five Blobs - The Blob

November 1958 - Weeks On Chart: 8 - Highest Position: 14

"The Blob" was the title track for the movie The Blob, which was Steve McQueen's first leading role. Based on the evidence of this song, The Blob was a hepcat jazzy dude. His song made it to #33 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The Five Blobs were a group of studio musicians who came together for the sole purpose of producing "The Blob". When bandleader Bernie Nee was not given any promotional credit on either the film or the record for his efforts, he took out an advertisement in the trade papers that showcased his name. In return, Columbia Records fired him.

The Five Blobs released two other singles after "The Blob" (on a label other than Columbia), one of which was titled "From the Top of Your Guggle (to the Bottom of Your Zooch)" (which I found unlistenable). They disappeared after that, presumably back into doing session work.

Bernie Nee (whose real name was Bernard Knee) went on to release "Hang In There, Mr. President" in 1974, which supported Richard Nixon's fight to avoid impeachment. (I have listened to 35 seconds of this so that you don't have to.)
