This was one of the earlier disco songs to hit the charts. It's less relentless in its use of the hi-hat and the group's harmonies are enjoyable to listen to, so I don't dislike it as much as I do most disco songs. But it's so very 1970s and the nautical metaphors in the lyrics tend to get a bit relentless after a while.
The Hues Corporation were from Santa Monica, California. Their name was a pun on "The Hughes Corporation"; they originally called themselves The Children of Howard Hughes before their record label told them that this was not a good idea. "Rock The Boat" reached #1 nationwide in Canada and the U.S., #6 in Britain, and the top ten in a number of European countries; it sold over two million copies.
Their followup, "Rockin' Soul", reached #18 on the Billboard Hot 100, and then it was downhill from there, sadly. The group broke up in about 1980. The lead singer on "Rock The Boat", Fleming Williams, passed away in 1998.
