The Jaynetts - Sally, Go 'Round the Roses

September 1963 - Weeks On Chart: 9 - Highest Position: 6

This song is unusual because its volume level went up and down through its recording, presumably to add a bit of drama. I like it but it's hard to figure out the ideal volume setting on my headphones when I play it.

The Jaynetts were assembled by Chicago-based record producer Abner Spector (no relation to Phil, as far as I can tell) to record "Sally, Go 'Round The Roses", which was co-written by his wife. There were five official Jaynetts plus about 15 other singers on the track; it took a week to record and cost over $60,000 to make, both of which were a lot at the time. The investment paid off, as it reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its arranger, Artie Butler, apparently made only $3 for his efforts.

A few other singles were released under the Jaynetts name from 1963 to 1965, which included some of the Sally singers. The group broke up after that.
