This is a song that kind of snuck up on me a bit - it's soulful and Mr. Adams has an impressive upper range. I guess I reconsidered it.
Johnny Adams (1932-1998) was from New Orleans. He was originally a gospel singer before switching to secular music in 1959. He reached #27 on the R&B chart in 1962 with "A Losing Battle", which was a slower song with more of a blues feel. He reached the top 50 in the R&B chart four times between 1968 and 1970; only "Reconsider Me" got anywhere on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching #28.
Adams went on to sign a contract with Rounder Records in 1983. He released nine albums on this label between 1984 and 1998 before passing away from prostate cancer.
