This is a classic bit of disco from the start of its era, starting off with hi-hat cymbal and everything. The musicians are really good at what they do and there isn't a lot of singing, so this is less annoying than some disco songs. But its repetitiveness gets to me after a while.
MFSB ("Mother Father Sister Brother") were a collection of studio musicians based in Philadelphia. They backed a number of artists recording there, including the O'Jays, the Stylistics, and Wilson Pickett.
"TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)" was the theme music for the TV show Soul Train. It reached #1 on both the US Billboard pop and R&B charts and sold over one million copies. The Three Degrees provided the vocals for the last part of the track; they had a hit in their own right later in the year with "When Will I See You Again", which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
MFSB continued to record singles under their own name for the rest of the 1970s and into 1980 and backed many popular disco artists of that decade. Financial issues later led them to split up into the Salsoul Orchestra, the Ritchie Family orchestra, and John Davis and the Monster Orchestra. Some of the members reunited in 2008 for new recordings.
