The CHUM Chart Book and the single label shown above list this band's name as People, but their Wikipedia page lists them as People! I'm going to go with the extra punctuation, as their version of "I Love You" is a giant exclamation point of a song, with plenty of meaningful pauses and dramatic drum rolls. It sounds like it belongs in a Sixties-era musical.
"I Love You" was written by Chris White of The Zombies. Their version of the song is slightly faster and somewhat less melodramatic but not particularly memorable; it originally appeared as a B-side of one of their unsuccessful singles. The Zombies were in a down point in their career when People! had a hit with one of their songs; naturally, this kind of bummed them out.
People! formed in San Jose, California, in 1965. Their version of "I Love You" reached #14 on the Billboard chart, though the Wikipedia page for the song claims that its progress in the charts was stalled by a competition between companies that advised radio stations on what songs were likely to become hits.
After this, People! released a few more unsuccessful singles. The band then splintered because all but two of the members became followers of Scientology. One of the two non-Scientologists, Larry Norman, became one of the earliest creators of Christian music.
People! were enshrined in the San Jose Rocks Hall of Fame in 2007. That might not seem like much, but I haven't been inducted into a Hall of Fame anywhere and you probably haven't either, so they're ahead of both of us.
