This is an absolutely classic garage rock song from the mid-1960s that most people have heard at one time or another. G-L-O-R-I-A!
The Shadows of Knight were from Chicago. Their version of "Gloria" reached #10 on the Hot 100 and sold over a million copies. The band were not able to replicate this success, reaching the lower parts of the charts four times in the late 1960s. They got together occasionally now and again after that until lead singer Jim Sohns passed away in 2022.
"Gloria" was written by Van Morrison and was originally performed by his band, Them. This version reached #64 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also covered by Patti Smith in 1975; she added some of her own lyrics to the song, including the well-known introduction, "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine."
