Jackie Shane - Any Other Way

April 1963 - Weeks On Chart: 9 - Highest Position: 2

On first listen, this seemed like a pleasant bit of low-fi old-school soul. I enjoyed it.

Jackie Shane (1940-2019) was one of the first transgendered performers in the music business, though she didn't officially proclaim this until a 2017 interview. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Ms. Shane was prominent in the Toronto music scene in the 1960s. Because of this, "Any Other Way" charted much higher in Toronto than elsewhere, reaching only #124 on the Billboard chart.

She continued recording singles through 1970 but then disappeared from the public eye, having moved back to Nashville to care for an ailing relative. Her former bandmates lost touch with her and many people assumed that she had passed away in the 1990s.

Created February 2, 2026.
