This is a song that is very much of its time, featuring an organ and also featuring Gayle McCormick singing in a style similar to that of Grace Slick in Jefferson Airplane. I thought it was okay but it's definitely a period piece from the late 1960s.
Smith were from Los Angeles. "Baby It's You" was their second single; it reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over one million copies. Future single releases, from albums recorded in 1969 and 1970, made it to #43, #73, and #101; the band then broke up. Ms. McCormick released three solo albums before leaving the music business in 1976.
"Baby It's You" was written by Burt Bacharach, Hal David, and Luther Dixon (under a pen name of Barney Williams). The Shirelles recorded the original version of the song in 1962, reaching #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #18 in Canada and on the CHUM chart. The Beatles recorded their own version in 1963; it's clearly inspired by the Shirelles' version.
