This is a folk song from the 1960s - it's very much a product of its time. It's not really my thing but at least I was able to listen to all of it.
Norma Tanega (1939-2019) was born in Vallejo, California, thus sharing a birthplace with Johnny Otis. Her mother was from Panama and her father was from the Philippines. After earning a master's degree in fine art, she moved to New York and became part of the Greenwich Village folk scene. She worked as a camp counsellor in the Catskills in the summer and was discovered while performing there.
"Walkin' My Cat Named Dog" reached #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK singles chart. While promoting her music in England, she met British pop singer Dusty Springfield; the two were in a relationship from 1966 to 1971. In later life, she returned to California, where she taught music and English as a second language, painted, and played percussion in experimental music ensembles.
