This is at the intersection point between soul, smooth jazz, and adult contemporary. I found it a bit too smooth and grown-up for my taste.
Tower of Power were from Oakland. They formed in 1968 as The Motowns before changing their name in 1970. "You're Still a Young Man" reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. Two later singles, "So Very Hard to Go" and "Don't Change Horses (In the Middle of a Stream)", reached the top 30 in the US but didn't chart in Toronto.
Tower of Power are still around - they last released an album in 2023. Tenor saxophonist Emilio "Mimi" Castillo and baritone saxophone player Stephen "Doc" Kupka have remained in the band all along. Their horn section has done session work for a number of artists, including Aerosmith, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Heart, Santana, and Paula Abdul.
