This was a fun listen but is very much of its time. It reminds me of contemporary songs by The Temptations. This is not surprising, as The Undisputed Truth were put together by Motown producer Norman Whitfield, who had been working extensively with The Temptations. He wanted to experiment with his "psychedelic soul" sound.
"Smiling Faces Sometimes" had previously been recorded by The Temptations; their version was 12 minutes and 41 seconds long. Whitfield had planned to release a shortened version of it as their next single before lead singer Eddie Kendricks left the band; he then had The Undisputed Truth record it. Their version reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The band continued releasing singles through the 1970s, undergoing several personnel changes and following Whitfield to his own record label when he left Motown in 1975. They made the lower reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 several times but did not get any more airplay in Toronto.
