For some reason, this song didn't really do it for me. Maybe the guitars were too busy or something, or maybe the singing was a bit too glib. I'm not sure.
Unit 4 + 2 were from Hertfordshire in England. "Concrete and Clay", their third single, made it all the way to #1 in Britain and Canada, but stalled at #28 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Their followup, "(You've) Never Been in Love Like This Before", made it to #6 nationally in Canada and #14 in the UK but only got to #95 in the US and did not get airplay in Toronto.
Eddie Rambeau, an American singer, released a competing version of "Concrete and Clay" at about the same time. His version reached #35 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached #6 on the CHUM chart in June 1965, which suggests that the station was playing both versions interchangeably. (Rambeau had a second chart entry, so he does not qualify as a one-hit wonder.)
Unit 4 + 2 continued releasing singles up to 1969 and then disbanded in 1970. A new touring version of the band was put together later in 1970 but lasted only two months before itself disbanding.
