This song is a perfect time capsule of the late 1960s - soulful, shouty vocals, and organ, guitar, and bass all played loudly, slowly, and very earnestly. I love it.
Vanilla Fudge were from New York City. "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was originally recorded by The Supremes, who reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the CHUM chart with it in 1966. Vanilla Fudge's version reached #6 on the Hot 100 in 1968 after a false start in 1967 in which it reached #67.
The group recorded five albums before splitting up in 1970. They reformed in 1999 and have performed various reunion tours, mostly with original members, ever since. They embarked on their "farewell tour" in 2011 but were still touring as recently as 2021.
