The Village Stompers were from Greenwich Village in New York. They were described as a "Folk-Dixie" band, mixing folk rock with Dixieland jazz. That's basically what this sounded like to me - I listened to it once and it was okay, but I didn't need to listen to all of it again.
"Washington Square" was their only significant chart success, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Instrumental Theme. The group continued releasing singles and albums until 1967, when they disbanded.
The co-writer of the song, Bob Goldstein, eventually renamed himself Bobb Goldsteinn. According to some sources, including his Wikipedia page, he was a former writing partner of Woody Allen and coined the term "multimedia". He's still alive - he turned 90 earlier this month.
