Wadsworth Mansion - Sweet Mary

February 1971 - Weeks On Chart: 8 - Highest Position: 2

I admit to a bias here: I love this song to bits. Especially the cowbell. I'd love to know the backstory: as I understand it, the narrator received a letter from his loved one and so he hopped a freight train while wearing his uniform. You could get at least a good short story out of this, couldn't you?

Wadsworth Mansion were from Providence, Rhode Island. They reached #7 on the Billboard charts with "Sweet Mary" and recorded two other singles and an album before disbanding in 1972. Two members of the band reformed it in 1973 but they soon changed their name to Slingshot.

The band was named after Wadsworth Mansion at Long Hill, an estate in Middletown, Connecticut. This historic building is available for weddings and corporate events. Guided tours are available.

Created November 17, 2025.
