I hadn't heard this version of "Wild Thing" in eons before playing it just now. My verdict is that it is trying too hard to be sexy. The beeps and boops of the mid-1970s synthesizer solo are interesting, though.
Fancy were a group of British session musicians. Their version of "Wild Thing" reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #9 in Canada but was not released in their home country. Their followup single, "Touch Me", reached #19 on the Hot 100 but didn't get airplay in Toronto; it's another song trying hard to be sexy. The band released two albums but disappeared after 1975.
"Wild Thing" was written by Chip Taylor, the brother of actor Jon Voight (his given name was James Wesley Voight), and who also wrote "Angel Of The Morning". The original version of this song was recorded by The Wild Ones, a New York-based band, in 1965; it features acoustic guitar, harmonica, and an unusual lead vocal. It's a one-of-a-kind in both a good and a bad way.
The best-known version of the song was recorded by The Troggs in 1966. This version reached #1 in the US and at least the top ten almost everywhere in Europe. It's about as much fun as you can have with three chords and an ocarina solo.
