Garry Miles - Look For A Star

July 1960 - Weeks On Chart: 11 - Highest Position: 2

I thought that the lyrics to this were sappy and that the singer was somewhat adenoidal. I could only make it through a few seconds of it.

"Look For A Star" was originally recorded by British pop singer Garry Mills. It was recorded for the movie Circus of Horrors, which was released in Britain in 1960. This version reached #7 on the UK singles chart and #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 but did not get airplay in Toronto.

When the movie was released in North America, record producers on this side of the pond scrambled to release their own versions of "Look For A Star". The most successful was by Garry Miles, a psuedonym obviously intended to sound as much like Garry Mills as possible. It was recorded by James Elmore "Buzz" Cason (1939-2024), a singer-songwriter based in Nashville, Tennessee. It reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Cason went on to have a long and varied career in the music business. Among other things, he co-produced The Crickets recording "La Bamba". He co-wrote the song "Everlasting Love", which was a hit for Robert Knight in 1967 and Carl Carlton in 1974; versions of this song have reached the Billboard Top 40 in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. He also co-wrote "Soldier Of Love (Lay Down Your Arms)", which was recorded by The Beatles early in their career.

Cason also worked for budget labels based in Nashville that recorded soundalike versions of popular hits, recording as, among others, Tommy Fuller, Fred X. Brown, Bob Lester, Farley Wayne, and The Shaw Brothers (both of them; he was double-tracked). In the 1970s, he founded a recording studio named Creative Workshop in Nashville; many famous artists have recorded there. In 2004, he wrote a memoir, Living The Rock'N'Roll Dream: The Adventures of Buzz Cason.
