If I am going to write about songs of the 1970s, I'm going to have to write about disco eventually and now's as good a time as any, I suppose. I'm not a fan of disco, to put it mildly, but I find this less irritating than some. The backing music is a bit more laid-back than other songs in the genre.
"Rock Your Baby" was written by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch. They were members of KC and the Sunshine Band, who had five monster chart successes between 1975 and 1977. The backing track for the song was recorded by Sunshine Band members Casey, Finch, and Jerome Smith in 45 minutes but none of the band could sing the high notes of the song.
The song was originally intended for Gwen McCrae, but she was late for the recording session, so George McCrae (born 1944), her husband and manager, stepped in to record it. "Rock Your Baby" only reached #2 in Toronto but made it to #1 in eleven countries, including Canada, the US, and Britain. It sold over 11 million copies; fewer than 40 singles have reached this level of sales.
McCrae made it into the British Top 10 twice more but did not get higher than #37 in the United States and did not get further airplay in Toronto. He moved to the Netherlands in 1989 and continued to perform regularly in Europe. He last released an album in 2016.
