This came out a year after "Rock Your Baby" and seems to be intended as an answer record or a corresponding companion piece. It's at the intersection point of soul and disco.
Gwen McCrae (1943-2025) was from Pensacola, Florida and began performing in clubs as a teenager as a part of singing groups. She married George McCrae one week after meeting him in 1963; the two performed together as a duo and he acted as her manager for her solo career.
"Rockin' Chair" reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. She never made this chart again, though she later appeared several times on the R&B chart. She and her husband recorded an album called Together in 1975 and then promptly split up.
Ms. McCrae continued plugging away at her career, releasing albums up until 2006. In 2012, she had a stroke that left her unable to walk. She died in a care home in Miami in 2025.
