White Plains - My Baby Loves Lovin'

May 1970 - Weeks On Chart: 9 - Highest Position: 2

This is one of a number of one-hit wonders from the early 1970s that feature British singer Tony Burrows. The others are Brotherhood Of Man, Edison Lighthouse, and The First Class. They all pretty much sound the same: catchy early 1970s-style pop.

White Plains evolved from The Flower Pot Men, a group of British studio musicians that reached the UK Top 20 in 1967 with "Let's Go to San Francisco". "My Baby Loves Lovin'" was their first single; it reached #9 in the UK and #13 on the United States chart. The group had three more Top 20 singles in the UK between 1970 and 1971 but did not receive any more airplay in Toronto.

While Tony Burrows was a member of this group until early in 1970, he sang backing vocals on "My Baby Loves Lovin'", not lead vocals; the lead singer was another member, Ricky Wolff. When speculation arose that Burrows had actually sung lead on this song, their producer, Roger Greenaway, wrote an official letter saying that he did not. So there.

White Plains split up in 1976 and briefly reformed in 1978. Two revivals of the group happened in the 2000s; Burrows appeared in both.
